The Fat Smash Diet: What it is & How it Works

After receiving thousands of requests from viewers for more information about the diet plan celebs used to lose weight on the hit show Celebrity Fit Club medical correspondent and health reporter Ian K. Smith, M.D., wrote the 'Fat Smash Diet.' In it, Smith has formulated a 90-day program with four phases and promises to permanently re-wire your relationship with food and fitness.

Smith, who assures that results will be seen in nine days, encourages dieters to "detoxify" their bodies with fruits and vegetables and eat four to five meals a day. Exercise is at the crux of the program, with physical activity prescriptions for each phase. More than half of the book consists of recipes, and meals are balanced and packed with nutrients.

The book guides you through four phases, each of which comes with lists of permissible and prohibited foods. During the intial detox phase, you eat mostly fruits and vegetables. No meat, bread, cheese, coffee or alcohol are allowed. Detox also comes with a prescription for 30 minutes of exercise, five days a week. In the foundation phase, which lasts three weeks, more foods appear on the permissible list and exercise is kicked up 10 to 15 percent above phase one. The four-week construction phase allows for an occasional treat, and exercise jumps 25 percent over phase two. Once dieters reach the lifetime temple phase, Smith claims they will have constructed a routine of good habits that will last a lifetime.

Detox comes with strict food lists and recipes. The foundation and construction phases feature cereal, soups, salads as well as chicken and fish dishes. Like most doctor-drafted diets, the Fat Smash plan emphasizes fresh produce, whole grains, lean meats, fish and poultry, and healthy fats.
